ROUND ONE vs Wahgunyah

Senior Football

Senior boys recorded a strong and encouraging win over a much-improved Wahgunyah Lions outfit, in what marked the side’s first genuine hit-out of the season following an interrupted pre-season.

With a new-look team taking the field, there was plenty to like from a Beechworth perspective. Debutants James McPhearson, Sam Johnson, Mark White and Charlie York all proudly pulled on the jumper for the first time and made immediate contributions, showing composure and intent around the contest. The club’s emerging youth was a standout feature across the four quarters. Rourke Warner, Oli Kavanagh and Ted Ritchie all showed excellent signs, with Ted  earning early bragging rights by joining the “first possession, first goal” club.

Kayde Surrey led from the front and set the benchmark with a best-on-ground performance, combining strong work rate with impact across the ground. He was well supported by a resolute defensive unit, with Hugh Kavanagh and Hamish Malsem holding firm down back, while Hayden Cooper and Liam Stephens provided strong connection and drive through the lines.

C Reserve

What a fantastic start for the C Res girls — first game and first win! I was incredibly impressed with the team today. The girls followed instructions well and maintained great composure throughout the match. After a slight slip in the second quarter, we regrouped, reset, and came back strongly to secure a great win of 34-21!

For a team where some players haven’t played netball in years — or at all — and have never played together before, this was an outstanding effort. I’m very proud of every single player.

Awards
Best on court was Kathryn, Second best on was Elsey, Third best on was Montana.

Overall, I couldn’t be prouder of the team — selecting award winners was extremely difficult. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this group continues to grow and what they can achieve this season.

Under 15’s

A strong start to the season for our Under 15s, taking the court for the first time as a new team and showing no signs of nerves. The girls came out firing, securing the first two goals and setting the tone early. It was great to see training translate into game play, with the team confidently executing their systems and structures under pressure. With a versatile squad, we were able to trial different combinations, using rolling subs to keep fresh legs on court.

Most importantly, the girls showed fantastic sportsmanship and support for each other throughout.

Our awards this week are shared evenly across the squad to reward effort and execution of systems across the whole court.

A great first hit-out with a 50 point margin and an exciting season ahead!
